A pool liner is the waterproof PVC sheet that lines the inside of your pool. A quality liner at 0.6 mm lasts 10 to 15 years with normal use. Choose your liner based on pool type, desired colour and budget: prices range from €150 for a standard overlap liner to €3,000 for a custom solution.

What types of pool liner are there?

There are three main types, each suited to a different installation. The type determines how the liner is secured and whether you can fit it yourself.

Overlap liner: the best-seller

An overlap liner drapes over the pool wall top and is clamped in place by the upper coping trim. This is the most common choice for above-ground pools. You install it by folding the liner over the walls and securing it. Replacement takes an afternoon and is a straightforward DIY job.

Beaded liner: the fitted option

A beaded liner has a reinforced bead along the top edge that clicks into a plastic bead receiver at the top of the pool wall. This gives a cleaner finish than an overlap liner and is popular on rectangular steel or aluminium pools. The receiver rail dictates the size — you cannot simply use a different-sized liner.

Custom liner: for irregular shapes

A custom-cut liner is made to the exact dimensions and shape of your pool. Required for free-form shapes, L-shapes, deep ends, plunge pools and in-ground concrete pools. An installer takes a template, the liner is factory-cut and a technician fits it. This is the most expensive option but delivers the best fit and longest lifespan.

What liner thickness do you need?

PVC liner thickness is measured in millimetres. Thicker liners cost more but last significantly longer.

ThicknessCategorySuitable forLifespanPrice
0.30 mmBudgetSmall above-ground pools4 to 6 years€60 to €150
0.40 mmStandardAbove-ground pools6 to 10 years€100 to €250
0.50 mmSemi-proAbove-ground and semi-inground8 to 12 years€200 to €400
0.60 mmProIn-ground steel shell10 to 15 years€300 to €600
0.75 mmPremiumHeavy use, sharp corners12 to 20 years€500+

For in-ground or semi-inground pools, use at least 0.6 mm. Stone or concrete walls with surface irregularities will puncture a thin liner. Reinforced PVC (with polyester scrim inside) adds extra tear resistance under mechanical load.

Which liner colour should you choose?

The liner colour affects water appearance and heat absorption. It is not a purely aesthetic decision — a dark liner warms the water faster but can mask algae growth.

Light blue and turquoise: The classic pool look. Gives bright, inviting water. Algae growth is easy to spot. The most popular choice in the Netherlands and most of Europe.

White and beige: Natural, light water colour. Popular with Mediterranean-style gardens. Dirt is immediately visible, which keeps you on top of maintenance.

Dark blue and grey: Modern look. Absorbs 20 to 30% more solar heat than a light liner, which can raise water temperature by 1 to 3°C. Early-stage algae are harder to see.

Sand and natural tones: Suits garden pools and landscape pools. Creates a natural pond-like appearance.

Can you get a custom-made pool liner?

Yes, custom liners are available for virtually any size and shape. The process:

  1. An installer or supplier measures the pool, including corners, protrusions and the positions of the skimmer, inlets and light fittings.
  2. Based on the template or 3D model, the liner is factory-cut and welded. Quality welds are invisible and as strong as the surrounding material.
  3. The liner is delivered folded and fitted by a technician while being stretched with warm water (around 30°C) to prevent wrinkles.
  4. Skimmer, return jets and lighting openings are cut on-site and sealed with matching gasket rings.

Custom liner costs range from €800 to €3,000 depending on surface area, thickness and supplier. Installation typically takes half a day.

How long does a pool liner last?

A pool liner lasts 8 to 15 years with proper care. The main factors that shorten liner life:

Too high chlorine: Chlorine levels above 3 mg/l put the PVC under stress. Correctly dosed chlorine has almost no effect on the liner.

Wrong pH: A pH below 7.0 is aggressive to PVC and accelerates degradation. Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6 at all times. Test at least twice a week.

UV exposure: PVC without UV stabilisers yellows and becomes brittle in sunlight. Always choose a UV-stabilised liner for an outdoor pool.

Mechanical damage: Sharp-edged toys, hard jump impacts and stiff brushes damage the liner. Use soft brushes and keep sharp objects out of the pool.

A regular maintenance schedule helps maximise lifespan. See the complete pool maintenance schedule for weekly, monthly and seasonal tasks.

What does a pool liner cost?

Total liner costs include materials and installation. For an overlap liner you do the fitting yourself. For beaded or custom liners, professional installation is needed.

How to replace a pool liner

Replacing an overlap liner is a 5-step DIY job:

  1. Drain the pool: Pump out all water using the drain outlet or a submersible pump.
  2. Remove skimmer and inlet fittings: Unscrew the gasket rings that clamp the liner around the skimmer and return jets.
  3. Remove the old liner: Pull it up over the walls. Inspect walls and floor for rust, damage or uneven surfaces. Treat rust spots before fitting the new liner.
  4. Fit the new liner: Lay it in the centre of the floor. Pull it outward from the centre to the corners, then up the walls. For pools larger than 4 x 6 m, work with a second person.
  5. Fill while pulling: Start filling as soon as the liner is in position. The weight of the water stretches it flat. If the liner skews, stop filling, reposition, then continue.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a pool liner last?

A quality PVC liner 0.6 mm or thicker lasts 10 to 15 years with proper care. Budget liners at 0.3 mm have a lifespan of 5 to 8 years. Excessive chlorine, UV exposure and mechanical damage all shorten liner life.

Which liner colour makes the water look best?

Light blue or turquoise gives the most attractive water colour. Dark colours absorb more sunlight and warm the water faster, but hide algae and debris. White and beige create a lighter, natural look.

Can I replace a pool liner myself?

An overlap liner on an above-ground pool can be replaced by a DIYer. For in-ground pools or beaded rail systems, professional installation is strongly recommended — incorrect fitting causes wrinkles, air pockets and early cracking.

What does a new pool liner cost?

An overlap liner for a standard 4 x 8 m pool costs €150 to €400 depending on thickness and quality. Custom-made liners for irregular shapes cost €800 to €3,000 including installation.

What liner thickness is best for my pool?

For an above-ground pool, 0.4 to 0.5 mm is adequate. For an in-ground pool with stone or concrete walls, use at least 0.6 mm. Premium quality starts at 0.75 mm and suits heavily used pools.
